Grandmaster Chan Jeong's 1981 World Games gold, on film.
A Korean documentary looks back at our founder's gold medal at the 1981 World Games in Santa Clara.
In 1981, Grandmaster Chan Jeong won gold in the light heavyweight division at The World Games in Santa Clara, California. MOOKAS, a Korean taekwondo media network, made a documentary about that fight.
What the documentary covers
The documentary calls him a “legend among legends.” It covers his 1981 World Games fight and the undefeated run that earned him an exemption from military service in Korea, and it notes that he carries on his legacy in Canada today.
The 1981 result
Public results for the 1981 World Games list Chan Jung of Korea as the light heavyweight gold medallist, ahead of Cisse Abouaye of Ivory Coast, with Tom Federle of the United States and Hsin-nien Sun of Chinese Taipei taking bronze.
Chan Jung is how his name is spelled in competition records. Our school spells it Jeong.
